Observations of an Inspector:
Small Quantity Hazardous Waste Generator Compliance Assessments

Time Commitment: 4-6 hours
Level: Intermediate to Advanced Course
Cost: $80.00

Course Objective: The objective of this course is to provide students with information on observations of common mistakes made by small quantity generators, and some possible approaches for compliance. This course is specifically geared for the environmental managers of facilities, which are usually the owners/operators in the case of small businesses.

Course Contents: In a series of three virtual lectures, students will be provided with:
  • Common mistakes made by SQGs and an explanations of why these are violations, and possible strategies or approaches to avoid noncompliance
  • Other observations of common SQG shortfalls that often lead to instances of compliance, and helpful hints to avoid these pitfalls
  • A discussion of the inspection process, and suggestions to make inspections easier to tolerate and to address noncompliance should violations be found.

Most facilities don't set out to violate. But, few have the time or the training to organize their program to make it violation proof. Most violations can be linked to poor organization and poor recordkeeping activities. Ergo, better organization and better documentation should help many facilities avoid violations.

In this course, compliance strategies are discussed. Students will also receive helpful forms, labels, checklists, and other documents which may be used to organize a facility's SQG compliance program. Other useful tools are suggested.

Course Limitations: This course provides common tools and common strategies. This course cannot address all instances of noncompliance and specific noncompliance issues that plague individual facilities. The application of the tools and information about the strategies to the unique situation at an individual facility is the decision of the facility. Ultimate compliance is and will always be the responsibility of the facility owner/operator. Facilities should be aware that use of forms creates a paperwork trail that can be used against a facility if the facility fails to regularly complete the paperwork and/or comply. We accept no responsibility for facility violations.

Use of the forms, labels, checklists, and other documents provided in this course are limited to the facility that hosts the registrant for this course. Viewing all assignments in this course, including those containing the common mistakes and other observations, explanations, and compliance strategies and helpful hints is limited to the individual registrant for this course. If exposure to this information is necessary for other individuals within a facility, they must also register.
