Wonderful World of Widgets: Materials Flow Balance Exercise
Course Objective: The objective of this course is for students to learn to conduct basic materials flow balances within industrial facilities. |
|||||
| Course
Contents: Virtual lectures and
hands-on activities are set up in a series of seven
assignments to enable students to learn to conduct basic
materials flow balances within industrial facilities.
Students will attend a virtual lecture on rules to
establish materials flow balances. Then, they will apply
these rules while being guided through the development of
a materials flow balance diagram for widgets and the
development of a widgets materials flow balance equation
which can then be used to calculate the widgets incoming
and the widgets outgoing. Students will also be prompted
to develop a materials flow balance diagram for zinc.
They will learn how to then use the diagram to develop a
materials flow balance equation. Students will then be
guided through calculations to determine the incoming
zinc and the outgoing zinc.
Students will be shown how to use materials flow balances to determine plant efficiencies, treatment efficiencies and removal rates, and assess the cost of environmental releases in terms of raw materials products losses and lost product revenue. Mastering the art of materials flow balances is also an important skill to develop in order to successfully comply with and complete EPCRA reporting. |
